Good news everyone.  The trails will open on November 19th, 2012.

This gets a little complicated so pay attention:  All trails (Yawkey, Portsmouth, Mahnomen, & Sagmore Units; Inserts B, C, D, & E on the CCSRA trail map) will be open come Monday morning.  However, as Old Man Winter descends, only the Sagamore (Insert E)and (drum-roll please…) the Yawkey Unit (Insert D) will be groomed and remain open through the winter.  The Portsmouth (Insert C) and Mahnomen (Insert B) trails will not be groomed and will be considered closed once the significant snow falls.

Here is a handy bullet list:

  • Mahnomen Unit (open; will close with snowfall)
  • Portsmouth Unit (open; will close with snowfall)
  • Sagamore Unit (open; will be groomed after snowfall)
  • Yawkey Unit (open; will be groomed after snowfall)

Winter Night Riding

The obvious ‘big change’ here is the addition of the Yawkey unit to the winter biking options.  Last winter, as part of the Whiteout, the Yawkey unit was open for one day.  This winter it will be open till the thaw in the spring.  Since the sun goes down quite early in the winter and the Cuyuna Country State Recreational Area does not close till 10:00pm, that means night time fat biking riding is available.

As with the trails in the summer, please be considerate of changing weather and trail conditions.  Also, please respect any temporary trail closures.
